They actually cut off sounds from the outside. KEVIN:Thanks to modern technology, we have in-ear monitors, and that allows us to hear everything that’s going on as if we were listening to a CD. OCR: When the Beatles toured in the mid-1960s, the fans were screaming so loud and so incessantly, I wondered whether the band could hear themselves. We are living a lot of people’s dreams, and we know that. We’re always grateful, and I think that goes back to our parents, who taught us to be appreciative. It never becomes old hat when you’re playing a venue that you’ve always dreamed of playing. NICK:It’s about challenging ourselves every day as musicians, artists, songwriters and brothers. OCR: And now that you are at the point where your arena shows sell out in a few minutes, how do you maintain your hunger? All the brothers were living in one bedroom, and hoping to sell enough T-shirts out of a van to make it to the next show. KEVIN:Oh, we were without a record label for an entire tour. OCR: So, you really did have a struggling period? They told us that because there was nobody out in the audience and they didn’t want us to get discouraged. That started when our parents told us not to look at the audience, and to just go out there and perform. KEVIN:We don’t like to look at the audience before we are about to perform. KEVIN:That’s not true, and we still have a tradition that goes back to those difficult days. OCR: Is that true? There is an assumption among non-fans that you are overnight sensations? KEVIN:We are very humbled by our fans because we remember when we only had 10 of them at our shows. They’ve been so supportive of our dreams. JOE:We love our fans, and we know it’s their way of showing their appreciation for us. KEVIN:There have been a couple of moments like that, but we have an amazing security team. OCR: Did you actually fear for your lives at that moment? NICK:You wonder if you’re going to be alive tomorrow. KEVIN:We were in Mexico City, and they had to call the riot police. It starts out funny but it can get scary. JOE (laughing):Thank you for that question that was very, very good. OCR: Could you guys give us an idea of what it’s like inside the bubble? It looks glamorous from the outside, but what is it really like to be inside a car when people are pounding on the roof? OCR: No, it was my fault for springing a joke on you like that. KEVIN:I’m so sorry I thought we were still talking about Stevie Wonder, and I was caught up in the moment. JOE JONAS (shaking his head):It was a joke, Kevin. OCR: How did you guys meet? (JOKE QUESTION ALERT) Seeing some our idols in the audience stand up and give us that response was more than we could ever have imagined. NICK JONAS:It was truly an honor to play with him, and even though we didn’t win best new artist, the win was in the performance. Actually, we were raised on two people – Carole King and her album “Tapestry,” and Stevie Wonder and everything he’s ever done. ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: Are you guys old enough to appreciate what you did last night? This interview took place in Los Angeles the morning after the brothers performed “Superstition” with Stevie Wonder at the Grammys. They nibbled from the plate the entire 12-minute interview.īetween bites, the Jersey-bred brothers discussed their new movie, which opens Friday, their musical inspirations and what it’s really like to be inside a car that is being rocked back and forth by crazed fans.īy the way, part of the concert footage was filmed over two nights at the Honda Center in Anaheim last July during the brothers’ “Burnin’ Up” tour. “You brought that just for us?” one of the brothers asked. When I was led into the brothers’ hotel suite and introduced to Kevin, 21, Joe, 19, and Nick, 16, I lifted the napkin and unveiled my antidote to celebrities with low blood sugar. I piled onion rings and french fries on a plate and covered them with a linen napkin. I ran into the hospitality suite, where the studio that is releasing the Jonas Brothers’ new 3-D concert film had a lunch buffet set up for journalists, publicists and TV crew members. My interview with the pop sensations is scheduled just before their lunch break, but if they’re already hungry and distracted by stomach rumblings, I could face the ultimate show business disaster – celebrities with low blood sugar.Ī hungry celebrity is not a talkative celebrity, so I needed to act quickly. The Jonas Brothers are hungry, and that’s bad news for me.
